Motorizing a Coffee Grinder on the Cheap

Motorizing a Coffee Grinder on the Cheap
Coffee to screwdriver setup.

I may have decided to venture into the world of espresso, but grinding 7-20g by hand at this fine setting quickly becomes tiring. So what to do? I could buy a simple electric grinder for a few hundred euros, but I already have two hand grinders. So the second best option is to add a motor to one of them. I've seen people connect their drill to a grinder in the past, 1Zpresso even mentions on their website that an electric screwdriver will work.

So over the weekend I went to my local DIY store to find an adapter that would go from a standard hex bit to 5.5mm. While there doesn't really seem to be a direct adapter, going via a 4-point connection seems to have done the trick. So, after about 5€ and 20 minutes, I have a way to use my screwdriver with my hand grinder.

Grinding this way works surprisingly well. Unfortunately, I have discovered that my Bosh IXO screwdriver is at the limit of the torque required to grind lightly roasted beans. I have to make sure it is fully charged or it may not work. However, it is better than buying another grinder when the two other ones still work.
